Department of Experimental Metaphysics

The Department of Experimental Metaphysics is guided by Lionel Snell, better known by his pen name Ramsey Dukes, author of ”SSOTBME, an essay on magic”, ”Thundersqueak” and other seminal magickal texts.

The Department’s courses encourage the exploration of relatively untrodden pathways departing from consensus reality. Techniques used rely on Austin Spare’s ”acting as if” while laying down of a thin thread of rationality to guide the seeker home.

Insofar as the Department welcomes dangerous ideas, the object of the return is not so much ”safety” as a means to bring back treasure further to enrich and embellish consensus reality itself.

Rationality is a natural tool for the explorer of ideas – in magical terms it is the Sword that cuts through dogma, obsession and ignorance to reveal the essence and underlying fabric of existence. Wielding this Sword can be an exhilarating experience, to the point where we focus more on its mastery than on the results in its wake.

Suddenly we stand alone in a clearing of our own making. The universe seems bare and uninviting. ”Is this really all there is?” we ask in our despair.

The Department of Experimental Metaphysics addresses this question, starting from a comparatively featureless, minimalist consensus reality – assuming no great superstructure of Gods, subtle energies or other planes of manifestation – and looking for ”cracks in the concrete” that might provide a fertile seed bed for more exotic possibilities.

It is basically the approach used in the writings of Ramsey Dukes to encourage individual exploration beyond the known and accepted universe. In this Department, however, we seek to develop it as a group experience by sharing our discoveries along the way to gather momentum for the Quest.

    In summary: -

    1. The freshman to the Department of Experimental Metaphysics asks: ”Is this really all there is?”
    2. The Batchelor, or BEM, states: ”It may seem to be all there is, and yet it conceals almost infinite meta-possibilities.”
    3. The Master, or MEM, postulates: ”Yes, this is all there is, yet the possibilities within need not be bounded.”
    4. The Doctor, or EMD, celebrates his knowledge that ”What there is, is all that is ever neeeded - and it rocks.”
    5. The Professor of the Department of Experimental Metaphysics simply smiles and enjoys it.
