The Department is led by Ian Read who is a former Section Head of the IOT Pact in the UK and is Drighten of the Rune-Gild responsible for Europe. Ian speaks German fluently, can read Scandinavian and Old Norse and has studied academic runology at University College London and elsewhere. He writes, composes and sings heathen music (often called neo-folk) in his band Fire + Ice and edits occasional Chaos International magazines and regular Runa magazines.
The Department will help anyone willing to work from being a beginner in Germanic magic, and particularly the Runic mysteries, to become an experienced user. Odin is the Chaos Magician of traditional Northern European belief who dares anything and everything in his quest for wisdom and knowledge (not at all the same things, of course). By following in his footsteps it is possible to understand and use the mysteries underlying the world we think we see around us and transform ourselves such that our higher self is in the driving seat, so to speak. Success depends upon the words from the Hávamál: sjálf sjálfum mér – given myself to Myself. The mundane self being subsumed in the higher Self. No-one could ever pretend that this will be simple or easy because anything whatsoever which is worth having is never easy. This is a challenge; if you want to see inside the doors of what is commonly called ‘Valhalla’ and survive that greatest of all journeys, the ways are all here. The Department will offer a Beginners course and this will cover all the basic ground necessary for real inner work to begin. Remember the famous three little piggies and how important it is to build with stone—no-one will ever manage to huff and puff and blow a Rune-Master’s house down. Further courses will teach the tools of advanced Runelore necessary for sorcery and other technical aspects of traditional European magic. Where you end up is in your own hands.
